I have always been intrigued and fascinated by Celtic art. The rich designs in the Book of Kells and the Lindisfarne Gospels, which have their design roots in the natural elements, have been particularly influential to my work: the swirling movement of water, the shapes found in plant life, the passage of the celestial bodies across the sky.
I seek to make sacred the nature that surrounds us, and invite the viewer to do the same. Consider how magnificent it is to be here on the Earth, and remember our reverence for nature; and recall that it is the accumulation of the small pieces that creates the ultimate circle.
With each image, I start with a basic geometric shape, the circle, and then with multiple layers of tracing paper I add forms until I am happy with the complete design. From there I transfer the image onto the final page, and then begin to paint. I paint the color in gouache which has a deep chalky finish. After the gouache comes the gold acrylic medium. I choose these mediums because the matte of the gouache and the contrast of metallic gold paint deepens the image and makes it, in the right light, look almost like velvet.
After hours of meditative concentration these works emerge organically into life and color.
